Paintings and Drawings

Although Asawa is known primarily as a sculptor, she started her art career as a painter, and most of her art training was in basic design and drawing. By third grade, she had begun to receive recognition for her artistic skill in school. At about the same time, an older cousin, Henry Asawa, whom Ruth looked up to and who was a very talented artist, drowned tragically.

After Henry's death, Asawa decided to take his place as the artist in the family. Later, when she was 16 and her family was interned, she spent hours every day painting and drawing. She learned from artists who were interned with her, some of whom had worked for the Disney Studios. She considers drawing every day a way to keep her spirit, eyes, hands, and mind healthy.
